The technology to support dwindling numbers of caregivers in face of ageing population is fast moving from automated alarms, self monitoring and ambient sensing devices towards robotics. Imagine if a mobile computer could actively locate and initiate a dialogue with granny living alone and assist her doctor to monitor her clinical condition, remind her about medications and appointments, help her to move around safely and raise an alarm in case she falls, and above all entertain her and help her communicate with family from a distance, how safe and convenient independent living could become!
In a recent press release Dr Bruce MacDonald from University of Auckland, Centre for robotics in healthcare, working in alliance with National Institute of Health Innovation, Uniservices and ETRI from Korea informs about the ongoing project at Selwyn village : http://www.stuff.co.nz/technology/digital-living/3086298/Robot-to-work-at-rest-home
